Remembering Douglas A. Smith of Manitoulin Transport

Sad to hear of the passing of Douglas Smith of Gore Bay. Douglas was a proud leader in our Northern Community and a recipient of the Order of Canada. In 1960, Douglas began his journey as an entrepreneur in the transport sector, starting Manitoulin Transport, a staple of our community to this day, employing Northern Ontarians for generations.

Douglas graciously advocated for advancements in our community including the Manitoulin Health Centre and most recently, the St. Joseph Lodge now under construction in Gore Bay. He also established the Douglas A. Smith Family Foundation to ensure continued support to the wider community.

In 2024, Cambrian College honoured the company’s dedication to education with the establishment of the Douglas A. Smith Family School of Business. A celebration of life for Douglas will be held in September. Our thoughts are with his family.

C’est avec tristesse que j’ai appris le décès de Douglas Smith de Gore Bay. Douglas était un leader respecté de notre communauté du Nord de l’Ontario et récipiendaire de l’Ordre du Canada.

En 1960, Douglas a entrepris son parcours d’entrepreneur dans le secteur du transport en fondant Manitoulin Transport, une entreprise emblématique de notre région qui continue encore aujourd’hui d’employer des générations de Nord-Ontariens.

Douglas a généreusement défendu de nombreux projets visant à faire progresser notre communauté, notamment le Centre de santé de Manitoulin et, plus récemment, le Foyer St. Joseph actuellement en construction à Gore Bay. Il a également créé la Fondation familiale Douglas A. Smith afin d’assurer un soutien durable à l’ensemble de la collectivité.

En 2024, le Collège Cambrian a souligné l’engagement de l’entreprise envers l’éducation en créant l’École de commerce de la famille Douglas A. Smith. Une célébration de la vie de Douglas aura lieu en septembre.
