Bridal Veil Falls on Manitoulin Island

Yesterday I walked down to Bridal Veil Falls on Manitoulin Island to see the cleanup after this spring’s flooding.

The falls are open again, but the Kagawong River trails are not. Sections of path are gone. Trees are jammed in the river. The pedestrian bridge is damaged. Landslides left the banks unstable. There is still a great deal of work ahead.

Bridal Veil Falls is one of the island’s main draws. When the trails are closed, visitors pile up at the falls and nearby businesses lose the longer stays that used to follow a walk along the river.

Manitoulin Streams and Billings Township have a multi-year restoration plan. Immediate work is estimated around $140,000; the full job could approach $1 million over three years.
